Last winter/spring I was gathering materials for a barn and saw quite a few adds for chicken house trusses in Eastern OK and AR. Ended up just buying prefabbed rafters at steel .

Yes it is now code required to have the circuit neutral/grounded conductor available in the switch box. There are some exceptions such as if the wiring method is conduit so it can . Especially if you are using the metal junction box as a self-made "extension cord" because if that box comes into contact with moisture getting an electric shock is a high .
Do not use sheet-metal screws. However, this may not be necessary. The device has metal tabs (ears) where you screw it into the box. Pay close attention - if the ears "bottom out" on the metal of the box, you do not . I was thinking on installing a short grounding bar inside the metal junction or outlets/switches box. Since the distance inside the box between GND holes matches with the bar mounting holes, it can be easily installed. That . 404.2 (C) has no exceptions for 3 ways so a neutral is required at all switches. The reason is because of the high use of timers, motion sensors, occupancy sensors etc which , in . A metal box can be mounted to a wood stud/or floating in drywall (old work box) with a ground pigtail and meet code requirements. In my mind , path of least resistance would .

The electron flow for the neutral is only going towards the panel. It is not going back to the ground screw on the device. The issue with a 3 wire setup for the dryer was that .

The new 200AMP Murry Boxes now have a split insulated bondable neural and a factory installed ground bar. When looking at one there is a insulated bar on both the right hand and left hand side and a non insulated . I'm installing a smart light switch into a box with no ground wire, screw, or threaded hole for a screw. The switch box itself it metal and grounded (live wire to box was 120V on my .
The passage (1962 NEC 250.114) governing bonding at metal boxes was rewritten to describe ground screw and/or ground clip connection of the EGC. Prior to the 1962 NEC . And even if the metal box is fed by metallic conduit, I still make a ground jumper and bond the box to the bonding screw on the device. . Also keep in mind that if you are using a metal junction box with outlets the electrical supply cord needs to be 12- / 14-gauge for 15-Amps. . Most receptacles have 2 hot screws and 2 neutral screws . So I have a service that hits a CT cabinet and meter, then penetrates the building and hits a gutter box. Inside this gutter box the hots are splices and they go off and hit 4 different disconnects which hit 4 separate panels. Inside this gutter box, the neutrals and grounds are all bonded together and bonded to the housing. This is incorrect?
Yep- 521.5.1 Ferromagnetic enclosures: electromagnetic effects The conductors of an a.c. circuit installed in a ferromagnetic enclosure shall be arranged so that all line conductors and the neutral conductor, if any, and the appropriate protective conductor are contained within the same enclosure. No part of the metal that encloses electrical devices or conductors is allowed to carry current except in the event of a fault. The neutral connected to a terminal bar that is attached directly to the panel would in fact cause current to flow through the panel enclosure My Champion generator is set up (according to the manual) as having a floating neutral. The plan was to run a 16A commando hook up cable from the generator, to supply the house via a 4 gang extension cable taken from the hook-up, to power class 2 devices in the house Outlet, Device, Pull, and Junction Boxes; Conduit Bodies; Fittings; and Handhole Enclosures 314.4 Metal Boxes. Metal boxes shall be grounded and bonded in accordance with Parts I, IV, V, VI, VII, and X of Article 250 as applicable, except as permitted in 250.112(I).
A metal box can be mounted to a wood stud/or floating in drywall(old work box) with a ground pigtail and meet code requirements. . which is why you do not get electrocuted if you touch the service neutral in a panel. The path back to the source is probably a tenth of an ohm resistance tops the path through you may be on the order of several . If you are positive the box is grounded (and not connected to neutral as @Ken questions), you can drill a self tapping sheet metal screw directly into the box. I find it easier to drill a small pilot hole before using a self tapping screw, but it generally isn't required to drill a pilot hole when using a self tapper.Trimming the box doesn’t repair the issue of the box not sitting flush with the wall. Drive a straight blade screw driver into the stud side and manipulate the box. Run a drywall screw in the back of the box, 1 1/2 inch at the the longest. Why would you run a 3” screw through a 1.5” stud?
Think about it. The neutral and grounding (bonding) are two separate circuits. The grounding circuit is not supposed to normally carry any current except in a fault while the grounded circuit always does. So if you intermix them . @oneilldmtn this site is for pros only so we do have to close this thread, but we can still help. NEC requires a floating neutral bus in a subpanel, but I have a downline metal junction box condition that appears to defeat this requirement. Please see illustration. In the metal junction box, where the white THHN connects to the bare copper wire, it appears that the required separation of the two subpanel busses is compromised.Attaching a copper wire to the box isn't going to fix that either. All I'm saying is electrically speaking, a device connected to a metal box with 6-32 thread count, with a metal yoke would have an equipment ground via the screws. Its the same . The ground is the bare wires in the back of the box. The neutral is the white bundle in the back of the box. . but that was only common since around 1980. The metal box served the same purpose if it was grounded. Reactions: CaptTom. Save Share . My electrical answers are based on 2017 NEC, you may have local amendments. Need a new person doing the work. I will not call him a electrical worker because he is not. 314.4 Metal Boxes Metal boxes shall be grounded and bonded in accordance with Parts I, IV, V, VI, VII, and X of Article 250 as .
Use of identified conductors 4-036(2). Where armoured cable, aluminum sheathed cable, copper sheathed cable or non metallic sheathed cable containing an identified conductor is used for single-pole, three way or four way switch loops, it shall not be nessesary to render the identified conductor permanently unidentified at the switch if the connections are made so that . My house built in the 1960's had NM cable with the reduced size EGC. The terminations were rather strange. The EGC's were threaded through a hole in the back of the box, twisted together and a fork stakon was crimped on. The stakon was terminated on one of the screws on the outside of the box. Better than nothing I guess.
The only way this works is to disconnect the neutral from the box & all the grounds, I believe. Given old house wiring: then (I think) connect all grounds to the box, in case any of them (or the cable) get back to a real ground. . Owner/electrical contractor Sep 20, 2020 . Unbonding the metal parts from the neutral at that point leaves you . The other side of the box has 3 sets of wires in it - each set has a black, a white and a ground. The grounds are all connected in a wire nut and attached to the metal electrical box. Originally two sets of white/black wires ran to a double switch. It had the tab removed (so it could split into 2 circuits itself?).Oh in that case its a yes. The ground wire gets attached to all boxes, devices, fixtures, and so on. Basically, if its metal and an electrical device it needs a ground. But the ground does not need to be dedicated, you can just wrap it around the ground screw in the box then attach it to the ground screw on the outlet. HOWEVER if Circuit 2 is a MWBC and the breaker is now live you just lifted the neutral and created a 240v series circuit. Also the neutral wire lifted weather its a MWBC or not may have 120v on the neutral wire. EDIT: As far as pigtails go. It could be fine if they are going to the same breaker or on a different phase of a MWBC.
The old wiring didn't have the ground wire so the outlets didn't have provisions for the ground prong - just hot and neutral and since there was no ground conductor in the wiring, the metal boxes at that time wouldn't have a provision to connect the ground wire to them. You absolutely can not expect a metal box to ground through the house! I am building a 30x50 metal garage. I am having a new 200amp meter installed for service. . This needs to connected to the neutral, ground in panel or ground rod? I am reading mixed opinions. wwhitney In the Trades. . Or find an electrical supply house instead of a big box store. Cheers, Wayne . Joshua5438 Member. Messages 87 Reaction score .
Looks to me like that neutral bar is screwed right to the panel box so the neutral is inherently bonded already. That double lug was not necessary and running that bare through both did nothing. The biggest problem is that not only did they remove the allowance to run a "3-wire" feeder to a structure, it was NEVER code to do so for a mobile . I've installed quite a bit of electrical wiring in my old house. Almost all of it has been with plastic boxes. . It returns through the neutral to ground bond in your service panel. It goes back to its source. . you'd hate my installations. The metal boxes are also connected with non-flex, thin-wall metal pipe called EMT. If that isn't . We've got the bonded neutral and ground from the generator going to the neutral bank and ground screw on the switch and a neutral from the breaker box going to the neutral bank on the switch. The generator manual recommends .
Thread starter 1793; Start date Sep 19 . took the black and used as a switch loop to a light and finally he took the white and tied it to the grounds in the switch box in order to get a Neutral for the . start due to wiring like this. The EGC used as a neutral, along with a poor connection to metal box at a critical point will likely cause .
